Juliet Hone’s work follows a constant preoccupation with surface texture and stitch structure having the air of individuality, contemporary, but timeless and completely hand crafted.
Perhaps it was the seeming ease with which her grandmother turned the heel of all the kilt socks she made for the boys or her mothers interest in painting and tapestry, but it felt natural for Juliet to be drawn to fiber arts.
After studying at Plymouth and Liverpool Art Colleges, she concentrated on sweater design showing at Chelsea Crafts Fair and galleries throughout the UK.
Since moving to the USA, Juliet is continuously knitting in one form or another, working alone or in collaboration; sampling or swatch design for Foley, Trash a Porter, GAP, Ann Taylor, Penguin and for some years having a fruitful working partnership with Samantha Smith with their line smith & hone. Recent projects have been multi functional tubular knits for Trudy Miller Layers, broadening the range of Pip-Squeak Chapeau etc with fully fashioned handloom knits and a window display of knitted grass and dandelions for Lion Brand Yarns.
At present Juliet is developing a range of handfelted clothing and accessories concentrating on the nuno technique of felting fibers through fabric such as silk chiffon or cotton gauze. This process plays with the curious natural behavior of wool fibers when dampened and agitated. Each piece is unique, controlled by color choice and fiber layout, but always with an element of risk and surprise. The rich organic forms achieved compliment the restrained simplicity of Juliet’s handloom knits.
